I introduce the Pivot, Pass, Catch relay as another throwing and catching game with the First Grade. The video below shows a bare-bones version of the game. The same setup can be used in more complicated versions using basketball and soccer skills. I like this game since it encourages teamwork, soft, accurate passing, and tracking.
Setup:
- Evenly space lines of 4-5 poly spots. For my class of 20, I set up 5 lines of 4 poly spots.
- Use a comfortable ball for your students. You can also use a variety of balls for subsequent rounds.
Instructions:
- Instruct students to sit on any available poly spot.
- The student in front of the line retrieves a ball.
- On the command “Go,” the ball is passed to each person in line. When the last student receives the ball, he/she runs it up to the front of the line while the other students scoot back one spot. This is considered one point.
- If a ball is dropped, the student simply picks up the ball and continues. There is no penalty.
- Repeat.
- Play for 2-3 minutes.
I will also ask the students to scramble (find a new spot) after each round to practice working with different students.
Give it a try and see what you think. Come up with your own variations. I’d love to hear your feedback.
