Students all over the world love fútbol or soccer as it’s called in the United States. In PE class, the soccer skills unit is an annual favorite. Each lesson focuses on a variety of skills ranging from ball handling, passing, punting, kicking for power and finesse, delivering and receiving a throw-in, and many more. One of our Hall of Fame warm-ups includes DRIBBLING to LA RASPA. LA RASPA is also know as the Mexican Hat Dance. Dribbling to LA RASPA has been around for years and continues to be a student favorite.
Why toe taps?
Toe taps are an excellent way to improve ball control and stamina, balance, and lower body strength. Specifically , toe taps strengthen quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, hip flexors, calves, and core. Equally important, toe taps will increase student heart rate improving the cardio vascular system.
Now add all that to LA RASPA. Simply stated, students perform toe taps to the beat of the song. As the rhythm changes, they transfer from toe taps to dribbling demonstrating ball control while using all parts of their feet. Combing a soccer skill with rhythm? AWESOME! My students love it. You’ll notice a variety of levels the first time you do toe taps with your classes. Ensure to teach proper technique. I encourage my novice students to barely tap the ball with the soles of their feet. Too much pressure in the beginning can result in a loss of balance. Over time, students speed and control will improve.
